Step 1: Install Penumbra via Dalamud
Launch FF14 through XIVLauncher. Dalamud will load automatically.
Open the plugin menu with /xlplugins in the chat.
- Search for Penumbra in the plugin installer
- Click Install
- After installation, Penumbra will appear in the plugin list
Step 2: Configure Penumbra
Open Penumbra with /penumbra in the chat or through the Dalamud menu.
First, set up your mod folder:
- Go to Settings → Root Folder
- Choose a folder where your mods will be stored, e.g.
~/ff14-mods - Click Save & Rediscover Mods
Tip: Choose a folder outside the FF14 installation directory
so mods are not lost during updates.
Step 3: Install a mod
Download a mod as a .pmp or .ttmp2 file (e.g. from Nexus Mods or XIV Mod Archive).
There are two ways to install it:
Method A: Drag & Drop
- Open Penumbra (
/penumbra) - Drag the mod file directly into the Penumbra window
- The mod will be imported automatically and appear in the list
Method B: Manual import
- Open Penumbra and go to the Mods tab
- Click Import Mod
- Select the downloaded mod file
Step 4: Enable the mod
- In the mod list: click on the imported mod
- Enable it using the toggle in the top right
- Click Apply — changes will be visible in-game immediately
Note: Penumbra loads mods in real time. You do not need to restart the game.
Some mods may require a zone change or scene reload to take effect.
Resolving mod conflicts
If two mods modify the same files, conflicts can occur. Penumbra highlights these in the mod list with a red indicator. You can adjust mod priority by dragging them in the list — higher up means higher priority.
Linux-specific notes
- The mod folder should be on the Linux filesystem (not inside the Wine prefix), unless you have a specific reason
- Pay attention to case sensitivity in paths (Linux is case-sensitive)
- Symlinks are supported
